A gentleman ordered a surprise birthday cake for his wife's birthday party. They have a Vizsla dog which it was to be a copy of, and a photo was sent for us to work from. He wanted something impressive for her, and for it to be delivered while she was out.

We also had to make a board for the dog to sit on, as we couldn’t get one big enough (this cake is 3ft by 2ft...!).
We started with baking 4 cakes as 10in squares, 4 cakes at 8in square and 2 cakes at 6in square, all vanilla flavour.

These were then filled with jam and American frosting, then stacked to create a very rough shape which we then sculpted into the shape of a vizsla puppy, laid down.

It was then covered in American frosting, with white fondant icing on top.

The next phase involved our air brush and edible paints to create the rich ginger colour.

Then the toning to make it more realistic, the features around the face, including the look of guilt.

Then it was time to paint the eyeballs, texture the nose and create whisker holes.

Finally, we cut up pieces of white fondant and laid them on the board to make it look like any naughty puppy who had torn-up an expensive Egyptian cotton sheet!

Here are some pictures of the process as it developed...

When we delivered it, the gentleman was so excited, and later at the party his wife was delighted too. All the guests were both amazed and impressed.

We got to see the dog himself whilst delivering the cake, and we're pretty happy with the likeness!

Happily, we have subsequently done another birthday cake for the gentleman himself, ordered by his wife.
